This was an animation I made by cutting out images taken from the recording made in 1894 by Étienne-Jules Marey and laying them over one of the desks in the studios at school that was white at the start of the year but is by now covered in the remnants of multiple students artistic efforts.

I'll post more images soon of the event, but this is the sign I put up for the art sale we had at our flat yesterday. Several friends from art school contributed art as well as others from the Whitecliffe community - not to mention my wonderful neighbour. Everyone had a superb time and we raised over $500 for Christchurch Earthquake relief, on a day when the weather made it pretty tempting just to snuggle up in bed with a movie.

Trina and Leandro joined Denise and I in Barcelona for a few days and after seeing other people zooming about the city in these funny little yellow cars, Leandro got it into his head that we ought to do it. We had a hilarious time, what with our unwillingness to follow the instructions of the GPS system that was telling us where to go and its tendency to tell us after we passed a street that we were supposed to have turned up that one it was amazing that we found our way around as well as we did.

Leandro's rather more complete account of events below:

We had seen the bright yellow "go cars", with their speed racer black stripe, zooming up the hill and through Barcelona the night before and we all were excited about the idea of having our turn at stylishly taking in the view. Matt (an IT genius) had googled and youtubed the cars finding the site, booking and researching what it would be like.
I was crapping myself about driving one (we had a go car per couple) I had never driven on the right side of the road before and European traffic has always given me the heebies. But once inside the go car and on our way it was great fun. Matt looked extra sexy in his open black motorbike helmet, somehow pulling off a "Chips" look. I looked more like the escaped special needs version of the biker from Village People.
The three wheel mopeds flew across the streets, naughtily we hit speeds of up to 60 miles an hour, albeit down hill. (Matt and Denise insisted theirs was slower, sure guys, good excuse).
We got terribly lost and then stuck in a traffic jam on La Ramblas while the GPS lady started to sound more like a repeating rapstar than a navigation system, that is if she was talking at all. But the fun factor was through the roof and Matt now has some great photos and video footage of us buzzing our way round the immigrant quarter and up the mountain, past Colombus and winding through many small side streets, beeping our horns cheerily as peoples faces brightened to see these crazy little yellow speed cars.
I would recommend it to anyone going to Barcelona or the other cities where it is available, it's not cheap but it was worth every penny, it's still making me smile inanely just remembering the experience. Though I would say it would be great if the GPS was more interactive and you had more choice of setting an itinerary and destinations. Plus I think the lady in the small GPS box in car 36 might need a reboot. Cheers guys, brilliant fun and a great laugh!

Been doing lot's of relaxing and a little painting in Barcelona. Days are full of trips to the fresh food market, siestas and dodging all the people who fill the streets. Nights seem to start late and finish just before the sun comes up with drumming not far from our window. Very good to be back here.

visited the tate modern yesterday on the occasion of their 10th anniversary: no soul for sale: 60 odd independent art collectives given space in the turbine hall. bits i liked best:

skatepark on the southbank on the way there;
girl knitting herself into a grey sleeping bag;
guys who set up a little pub in the back of the hall (except that they were the only ones allowed to drink);
guy making eery wailing noises on some kind of repeating recording on the stage as we left;
all the info about the art collectives and what they are doing;

ink drawings i did this morning

been feeling a bit constrained in my paintings, afraid the further i get that i'm going to spoil them. also precious about the work that goes into the initial drawing, i find it quite tiring trying to get the proportions right. so last night i did a quick charcoal drawing consciously trying to emphasise the strength of line over getting the figure right. then i added some red and white acrylic paint. the charcoal comes off on the brush as i try to paint over it and it has some water-repellent qualities. i don't have any black acrylic paint so i then used drawing ink to fill in the shadows.

i gave myself a mission to collect enough pictures for another mosaic on the way to work. the challenge of taking pictures amongst busy commuters and colleagues was surprising. felt wierd pointing my camera at things, asked the woman with the red glasses if i could take her picture which was daunting but she was nice even though she was late for work.

A kind colleague has agreed to let Susan and I stay in his apartment near Montmatre when we visit Paris next weekend. This was a trip arranged before we decided to go our own ways - a birthday present for moi. I wasn't going to go but in the weekend we decided that it could work just fine and it seems such a pity to waste good eurostar tickets. Positively irresponsible. Some people will and do think me/us crazy.

Losing my Identity

This is an experiment. I felt like writing something but somehow the keyboard and I don't quite get on and think it's the nasty way I have to twist my wrists and sits in a chair.. yuck I'd rather lie on my bed looking out the window so that's what I'm doing talking into my microphone and letting the computer do the hard work.

It just occurred to me with all this talk of identity theft on face book, if people know your birthdate and your name pretty soon they'll have your wife and kids as well. When I first put up my blog it didn't occur to me that I should keep those details a secret so I had my mobile number and my address on the Internet.

Then one day as I came home late to my apartment in dodgy Deptford, while fumbling in my pocket to get my keys I must have let my wallet slip out and onto the ground. But I didn't realise.

The next day I received a text message from someone who had my wallet and said he lived just downstairs so I could pop down and get it.

He had found a and looked my name up on the Internet and found out who I was where I left and gave it back to me including all the cash and we became friends.

In March, Susan and I took the campervan for its first drive up to Scotland and on the way stopped to check out the Peak district and stayed for three days it was so nice. The first night we couldn't find a campsite so we just parked up on the side of the road. In the morning we went for a bike ride and found the most amazing campsite called upper booth or lower booth - I can't remember which. But anyway it was superb and we were the only people there.

Nude Juice Bar - Leeds

First post in a while. I've made a new photo gallery, I've quit my job, finish on December 1st and fly to NZ on the 4th for.. a month or so. Haven't bought my ticket back yet because I'm trying to figure out how I can pop in and see JJ in Tasmania on the way back.

Things on my mind this morning..

Why don't the 90% (wild guess) of people who don't have the time or the inclination to
acquire the knowledge they would need to make best use of the technology available to them have anyone to support them?

I would like to see technical support come out of the dark ages.

If I can write this from a cafe in Leeds, it should be possible to get in touch with the person who can analyse and provide the right answer to your question within minutes and it shouldn't cost more than the computer they're trying to fix. But then why just computer problems? Actually, come to think of it there are some freaky sounding services in the UK that promise to answer any question and text you back the answer...

in my memory we drove through the dark, kobi and i in my silly little convertible with the roof down even though it was raining which is actually fine as long as you don't have to go under 40 Ks. when we got to muriwai it wasn't raining much - just spitting but it was windy as hell. it was so different to see the gannets at night in the nasty weather. i'd never thought about those guys perched like that in the rocks against all that horribleness. they all seemed to be awake making little noises at each other you could occasionally hear over the wind and i lay down on the big wide railing and closed my eyes and thought about what it would be like to go to sleep like that, i'd be afraid of the wind and the cold and the rain. then i realized, yes, but you'd just have to trust it wouldn't you and i felt myself relaxing. i think i try to carry that feeling around with me. especially at the moment. london is a scary place - but i am love, love, loving it. i don't think i've ever fallen for a city before. sure, i flirted with Wellington but never let myself be fully tempted.

very quiet weekend. friday night at home - early to bed. saturday poker night with the boys from work. lovely ride to brick lane on sunday morning for a delicious brunch at cafe 1001 and met the maker of my favourite "I'd rather be wanking" t-shirt. met up with lisa for a bite to eat at Soba in soho which was disappointing - the food, not the company.

now it's monday 8:15 and i'm off to work at 8:30 to cycle through the 2 degree morning.

Here I am at the end of the week about to head off to Brighton for the weekend and still haven't got anything up about last weekend. Struggling to get to bed early enough to wake up in time to get to work this week. Body clock seems to be back to normal now though as today is the first time I've woken up early early. (or has the stress caught up with me)

This is a new and entertaining concept for me at least: if you want to see the pics from antwerp you have to have the password which is my first middle name - starting with 'd'. Just use your name for username.

Visited Saskia at her soon-to-be-ex-flat in Antwerp, Belgium as she is off home to NZ next week. Lovely weekend; delicious food and wierd coloured belgian spirits; fantastic cafes and delightful company. One of those weekends when everything seemed worthy of a photograph, though I have picked just the best for the site.

too tired to write. well, ok. went to a party on new years eve in tufnell park after scouring my address book for anyone in europe who might be having a good party. and it was. lisa came home with me at 4am to help me pack bags and make sure i got to heathrow by 7am which i did, well, close enough. sergio met me at vancouver airport a little jaded (me not him). and there began the last 4 days of glorious vancouver action holiday. snoeshoeing, snowboarding in whistler, bike ride in the snow, very fun. click pics above for more. leaving for nz tomorrow midday.

(1) Stayed xmas eve at Lisa's in Acton. Woke up very early with beautiful cold blue sky and had to get out in it.
(P) Rode through Hyde Park even tho you're not s'posed to.
(2) Got to work where I had left all my xmas day stuff then Bex called to see if I was going to make it to Jeff's in time for brekky which was soon and I was hungry so I said yes.
(3) Ride up to Jeff's took an hour because I went the wrong way and had to stop lots to check where I was. We opened pressies and played games and misbehaved until it was today.
(4) Woke up early again, got on my bike and once I was in town, decided to take a ride down Oxford St, considered going to Selfridges for Boxing Day sale but there were queues at 9 and it opens at 11:30 and I was afraid it would put me in a very bad mood so I took off...
(5) back to work where i am typing with cold fingers and empty tummy

Jolly well looking forward to going home in a couple of weeks. Not that there is anything wrong with here. Typical week-night. Got home about 8.15 - bike is in the hall just past the stripey shirt. Polished off a healthy shot of Baileys, no dinner to cook 'cos I had a Marks and Spencer ready made meal at work at about 6.15. Finding I sleep better if I have dinner early.

On the table is my Natwest credit card which arrived tonight. Finally after over 3 weeks. I now have some means of getting money apart from going into my bank and cashing a cheque or using my NZ cards. Still no sign of a cash card tho. And the silly tossers only gave me a £700 limit. Fortunately my blood-pressure has calmed down since I've started going to the gym lately so I'm able to cope with these infuristrations.

The plier thingeys are on the table cos Alex went all xmassey at the weekend. He got a load of nuts in their shells and arrived home drunk the other night and ate a bunch of them. The mirror is here because I used it while shaving my beard this morning. Washing is hung up around the place; feels like a constant stream of business shirts, underwear, t-shirts and socks, wondering if I can justify getting an extra weeks worth of shirts and having them cleaned at the drycleaners week and week about.

What else.. ah.. listening to funky music. I'll see if I can get a bit of it up on the site...

Will be lovely to see everyone at home tho.

mm.. I am just noticing how convenient and pleasurable it is to read a paper where I am actually interested in most of what it has to say. Its such a treat to find myself absorbed in the front page, excited as i turn over to the next and feeling mentally exhausted by about the 4th. And no rugby.
Nothing against rugby and i've never really complained about it before but.. what a relief not to have it dominating an already measly paper like the herald.

Fascinating me today is the political drama surrounding the now acrimonious and curiously backward custody battle between the blind home secretary David Blunkett and the glamourous, married magazine publisher Kimberley Quin with whom he had an affair. Incredible example of a politician taking the opposite of the standard approach ie. he is not denying any failings and pretending everything is cool. I'm not sure who I feel sympathy for but it is utterly intrigueing.

This was publicly requested by the Ambassador in a fairly unusual move by him trying to get previous statements retracted. More and more and more interesting.

first ride on new bike

very busy day.. woke up 6ish, lay in bed trying to sleep and failing browsed the net looking for a good deal on a bike and 2 hours later i was gingerly dealing with london traffic on my way home with a beautiful 2nd hand Specialized Crossroads hybrid, mountain/road bike. Lovely, lovely. Alex (flatmate) kindly took me for my first ride and gave me an intro to london traffic and a fantastic tour which you can see here.

I'm deeply in love with it and the trip to work which is just 12 minutes up the Thames on the ferry. Fantastic. Beats the hell out of taking the tube. Here's an aerial photo of the flat. We're in Southeast London just 20 mins walk from Greenwich. In the top right you can see the Millenium Dome. I should write more but its after midnight and I'm exhausted.
